The COVID-19 vaccine

Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, has urged those over 60 years of age to go for their COVID-19 vaccine, as the country implements the second phase of the vaccination rollout plan.

The safety and well-being of our residents has always been our number one priority at

La Récolte, therefore most of our residents have received their first vaccine with the assistance of van Biljon Nursing service on the premises.

Frequently asked questions

How can you be sure that the COVID-19 vaccines we use are safe?

The Department of Health is working with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) to ensure that the vaccine made available through the COVAX Facility has met all the regulatory requires of safety, efficacy, and quality.

What are some of the common side effects of the Covid vaccine?

There are two main types of adverse reactions our bodies have to vaccination: local side effects (such as redness or swelling at the injection site) and systemic ones (such as headaches and fever).

Is the COVID-19 vaccine compulsory?

The simple answer is no. Based on our constitutional ethos, a person's decision to receive a vaccine must always be voluntary and made without any undue influence

Health Talk: Diabetes

So yes, seniors are at a greater risk for developing diabetes.

Simply put, elderly people have been exposed to sugar longer than other generations of people, so their chances of developing abnormally high blood glucose levels and, ultimately, type 2 diabetes is greater.

How can diabetes affect you?

It's important to manage diabetes because, over time, it can cause serious health problems like heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye problems, and nerve damage that may lead to amputation. Also, people with type 2 diabetes may be at greater risk for cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

What are the first signs of diabetes?

The most common initial symptoms of type 2 diabetes are increased thirst and frequent urination. Excess glucose in your bloodstream sucks water from tissues, forcing you to want to take in more liquid. Feeling lethargic, tired or chronically weak can be a sign of type 2 diabetes.

How can prevent diabetes?

Diabetes in the elderly can be prevented or delayed with lifestyle interventions, including improved nutrition, increased physical activity, and weight loss.

Freezing temps? Check. Gray skies? Check. Crabby mood? Check again. But not for long

Warm woolen mittens, hot chocolate and crackling fires. Taking the time to savor the most amazing things about this season can make you more content.

Winter is in full swing in South Africa, and instead of taking the moody route, decided to fall in love with our South African winters.

Why do you ask? Well there are just so many things to do and see when the temperature drops. So grab your scarves and gloves and find out what SA has to offer during the chilly months.

Winter is just another reason to enjoy wholesome South African food, food that brings back memories and creates lasting new ones. A hearty lamb potjie, bobotie or bean soup are just some of the comfort foods to enjoy this winter.

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant,

if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.”
