Resident of the Month

tol Otto

Mr. Otto is one of the oldest residents at La Récolte.

He is warm, approachable and to my surprise 90 years of age!

It is a honour to have him as resident of the month in this month’s Edition.

In the Spotlight

Tell me about your life before La Récolte?

90 years ago, I was born in Parow Western Cape. After leaving school, I started working at

Plywood’s in Parow. Every so often the company would send me overseas to buy machinery and run factories. I married my wife, Joan in 1958.

In 1960, I was sent to Borneo to open a new factory. Unfortunately, the factory burnt down and we had to return to SA. I worked for this company until I retired and became a Director.

Why did you decide to retire?

On Friday, 13th February 2015, my wife and I lost our house to a fire.

We rebuilt the house but after two years decided to retire.

Why did you decide to become a resident at La Récolte?

Our son brought us to the La Récolte office, we decided we liked what we saw, and bought our unit. We are enjoying the peace and quiet, and have made some very good friends, and find life really wonderful.

What do you do for fun?

I started cycling at the age of 18.

I first rode for the WP Junior team and later for the Senior team. I was chosen as Captain of the Bellville cycling team, as well as the Captain of the WP senior cycling team.

I was WP champion in both the 5- and 10-mile races. After my competing days were behind me, I qualified as International Cycling Referee for road and track racing.

Positive Aging

How do you feel about growing old? For some, it’s a scary time filled with change and loneliness. But it doesn’t need to be that way. In fact, it shouldn’t. We’re social creatures and growing old isn’t a solo sport. That’s what positive aging is all about. How we choose to define, view, and accept the changes is crucial to our ability to “age gracefully.”

One element of life that is guaranteed for each and every one of us is that of continuous aging and death. No matter who you are, where you are from, or what you do in your life, you are going to experience aging. While there are certainly things one can do to slow the aging process, there is nothing one can do to mitigate aging and the things that aging brings. Therefore, instead of trying to stop aging, it is best to try to embrace ageing .

The Secret of Successful Aging. The key? Don’t let loneliness take over your life. Real conversations are the answer. We’re social beings and need to stay connected to others.

Here are three suggestions:

Celebrate your age

Defy expectations

Grow friendships

Aging can be difficult to accept. Our body might not be able to do the things it did when we were young. Bones break easier. Aches and pains can be a daily occurrence. Our vision becomes impaired, our hair turns grey, our noses and ears stretch and we get shorter. As we age, we struggle to find our place, so redefine who you are and identify your purpose!

Medication Mistakes

by Seniors

If you are struggling to manage your medications, these tips will be of interest.

Reading tiny print

Seniors often have some type of vision loss, especially when it comes to reading fine print. Ask your pharmacist to use labels with a larger font that is friendlier on your eyes.

Storing medication improperly

How you store a medication can impact its effectiveness. For many people, that means a kitchen counter or bathroom cabinet. Unfortunately, both are bad locations because temperature and humidity can fluctuate widely in both places.

A bedroom drawer is usually a better option.

Getting times confused

Some prescription medications are time- sensitive, including those for diabetes and heart disease. If a dose is missed or if several doses are taken too closely, the result can be dangerous If you are struggling to remember you dosage and time of medication, get a Medic Pill Box from Dischem so that your monthly prescription can be divided and set your alarm to go off every day at the same time as a reminder to take your medication.

What is Movember?

Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide.

Patchy, lopsided, itchy or epic – whatever Mo you grow this Movember, your face will raise awareness for men’s health.

Summer Sun

Everyone needs to take precautions from the sun… and heat. However, it is even more important for senior citizens to do so. Although an excessive amount of sun and heat is not good for anyone, the consequences of overexposure to older people can be severe. Thankfully, there are some easy precautions you can take to enjoy the sunshine safely.

Make smart clothing choices- When you are making your summer clothing choices, don’t forget about your head. Wearing a hat goes a long way to keeping you cool and safe in the warm weather.

Wear Sunscreen- If you are planning on being outside on a sunny day, make sure to slather on a layer of sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 before you leave your house.

Keep your eyes protected- Simply wearing sunglasses is an easy step you can take to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and help to preserve your vision.

Keep yourself Hydrated- It is essential to keep yourself sufficiently hydrated when you are in the heat and sun. Your best bet is to drink water. But, you can supplement it with other beverages as well.

Eat for the weather- If you feed your body right for the weather, you will prepare it for battling the heat. Go light on the protein and opt for a salad or fresh fruit instead.
