Resident of the Month

Warner Slater

Warner Slater is the Vice President on the board of Trustees at La Récolte, proud owner of three units and a highly respected resident.

Therefore, it is a honour to have him as Resident of the Month in our August Edition.

Warner Slater in the Spotlight:

Please let me about your life before retirement?

I met my wife at school in standard 5 in the small town of Grabouw.

We married in 1974 and after 46 years and a pigeon pair (daughter and son) we are still going strong. After school I joined the Airforce and became a aircraft technician for 28 years. I took the severance package when the opportunity with the new political dispensation was offered. I then started a 2nd hand car selling and rental business until i sold it and retired.

Why did you decide to retire at La Recolte?

I always lived in the Eversdal/Stellenberg and my daughter started her school in the day care premises on the same spot where La Rècolte is built now. This stands to reason why i bought 3 apartments in the complex. I now utilise one apartment as a “lock up and go” and alternate between my holiday home in Pringle Bay and the excellent convenient located

La Récolte, retirement complex.

What do you do for fun?

We enjoy traveling in our camper van and regular go on camping excursions.

Food Shopping during Covid-19

As the Covid-19 pandemic persists, one task many are concerned about is grocery shopping. Personal contact with fellow shoppers can cause apprehension.

Finding ways to keep your pantry and refrigerator full without putting your health at risk is essential.

Shop Safely at Your Local Grocery Store- If you enjoy the experience of shopping for your own food and don’t want to give that up, call your favorite grocery store, or check their website. See if they have a dedicated time to shop for seniors. Many stores are opening an hour earlier to accommodate shoppers who are at higher risk. Also, ask what procedures the store has in place for disinfecting and sanitizing carts, shelves, coolers, and more. Does the store require employees and shoppers to wear masks? Is hand sanitizer readily available? The answers to these questions may help you decide if you feel safe shopping at the store or if you need to pursue other avenues.

Alternatives to In-Person Grocery Shopping- Fortunately, there are alternatives to going into a grocery store to do your shopping, as most stores are offering online ordering!

Disinfecting Groceries at Home

There are no hard and fast rules for how long it can last on different types of surfaces.

If you’d like to be on the side of caution, wash your hands in hot soapy water before you begin unloading groceries, use disinfecting wipes on cans and other hard surfaces, and throw any packaging or bags directly into your trash, along with the wipes.

Natural Mood Boosters

You have probably heard of the stereotype of the grumpy old man.

While it is only a stereotype, many senior adults do have issues maintaining a good mood. There is a reason why some seniors have a difficult time staying in a good mood: Serotonin. Serotonin, a naturally occurring hormone, assists in keeping us happy and cheerful.

A decrease in serotonin can lead to bad moods, sleeping difficulties, swings in weight and a change in sexual desire and performance.

Sometimes, as people age, they begin to suffer from a decrease in serotonin.

Fortunately, it is possible to boost serotonin levels when they begin to fall.

Natural Ways to Boost Serotonin "Happy Foods"

There are a number of "happy foods" that will contribute to the manufacture of serotonin. Although this route doesn't work as quickly as taking a serotonin supplement, it is an option for those who are opposed to taking a supplement.

The food include brightly colored vegetables, Bananas, Fish, Turkey and dark chocolate.

Serotonin Supplements

Available both as an over-the-counter supplement and as a more powerful prescription drug, serotonin boosters can increase the level of serotonin in your bloodstream and help return your mood to the desired level.

In conclusion, by eating carefully, exercising, and following a careful diet with a monitored use of supplements, you can maintain a cheerful outlook and can lead a happier and more fulfilling life.
